The buildings featured in the photo are a new generation of HDB flats built in Singapore. They are shot against a dawn backdrop. These flats boast high storeys, strategic locations, and all if not most feature 'gardens in the sky'. Through my view from International Plaza in Tanjong Pagar, I could almost visualize and picture a new Singapore completely covered with such fine and modern architecture. It seemed so real that it no longer felt as if it were merely a fragment of my imagination. I look forward to witnessing the materialization of this surreal sighting.

HDR (high dynamic range) really, really, really, opens a door of opportunities... This was taken through my house window. I waited for 15 minutes for the clouds to form above the building itself. I set auto exposure bracketing and took three shots continuously each with a diff exposure, and processed them in Photomatix!

On the bus, I met the really annoying Singaporean woman. The bus, understandably at that time, was flooded with Rafflesians drenched in sweat. All the other commuters lived with it with the "oh-ok-this-is-just-an-isolated-incident" attitude, but this specific woman was so irritated she screamed at the top of her voice. She was like, "HEY PLS MOVE TO THE BACK.. THERE ARE SEATS THERE CANNOT SEE MEH?" ok, there somehow were an empty seat, but to get there required much difficulty! So many people in between... We were already trying our best to move in!

I am certain that if this woman were in a bus full of employees coming home from work, she wouldn't have screamed. What is this, she can look down on us and boss us around because we are students? We were trying as hard as adults to make life easier for others. (except for the empty chair part, that was everyone's fault. But maybe we just wanted to give the seat to someone who deserved it more) Come on, Singaporeans, COMPROMISE...

Yeah and that typical example of queuing up to enter MRT trains. I've noticed that this is not a myth nor is it a gossip, it's a fact. They JUST DON'T WAIT for you to come out. What do they think will happen? DUDE, a monster's gonna gobble you up if you stay out there? Oh come on...

On the Future of the Photographic Business

1789 was a year of revolution. It was a year when men and women seeking for freedom finally unleashed their roar. 1868 was a year of revolution. It was a year when Japan, the first geographical Asian country, opened its doors to the western world, therefore dramatically changed the modern history of Mankind. 1987 was also a year of revolution. It was a year when Canon ultimately abandoned her original FD system to embark on an unexplored journey for the quest of faster, quieter and more accurate focusing system – the Electro-Focus.

It was scorned by veterans: slow, noisy and out of focused. But that atmosphere did not prevent a group of photographers from moving to the greener pasture. They are the sports photographers. Their opinions, bias and likings would dramatically change the photographic world in years to come, and indeed, they had. In the belief that the new system will allow all her users to grab that victory kick from Pelé, sports photographers swayed. They swirled to the Canon camp, and Nikon never had the chance to invite them back.

The reason is simple. The change from Canon was revolutionary. When photographers changed to Canon, the news agencies followed suit. When one camera is bought, a system will be built up. After 1987, even though Nikon has also produced AF with comparable power, the change is non-reversible. When a system is at stake, everyone will think thrice. Change is no longer an easy matter.

In 2006, Konica Minolta announced its withdrawal from the throat-cutting photographic sector, selling all its assets to electronic giant, Sony. Under the eyes of Canon, Nikon, and various other dominating companies, Konica Minolta performed a magic. It was so amazing that it was a perfect recipe to another revolutionary idea. The strategy was to stick an image stabilizer to the camera sensor, and probably patented it.

This is no small move. With this, Sony made her first bang into the market, terrifying all her competitors. This is because not only is Sony rich, which means she can transfer large amount of funds from all her other business sectors, her strategy is A-bomb equivalent. An amateur photographer may probably be fully aware of the various gimmicks introduced by the photographic companies: High ISO, dust-cleaner, anti-reflective coating… Among one of these gimmicks, which has real functions, is the “Image Stabilization” function.

Canon has the “IS” lenses, Nikon has the “VR” lenses, and Sigma has the “OS” equivalent. In simplicity, this function negates the effect of handshake from photographers, thus reducing the chance of creating a blurred image. The method to do this is by incorporating the complex mechanism into each and every lens, thereby producing an “anti-shake” lens. This is great. Photographers no longer need to follow strictly to the “1 over focal-length” rule to decide shutter speed. A picture can now be taken at 100mm with a speed of 1/6 second. This is previously unthinkable and now it is achieved.

Of course, everything has its price. An added function like this can often double the cost of lens. For example, a Canon EF 70-200mm F/4L can cost $550 while her IS capable twin costs $1100. This is the market value of the anti-shake function. So the consumers are now given a tough choice to make.

Then along the way came Sony, whispering to the market about her new idea. It stirred a whirlpool. With Sony, you can now enjoy the benefits of anti-vibration on all lenses without exception because the very mechanism is fitted snugly in the body. With half the money, Sony users get to use the function. We are talking about thousands of dollars of difference here and Sony instantly sweeps the “new-entry” market.

If this blow alone is not enough to threaten Canon and Nikon’s supremacy, Sony has yet another strategy. It has been a few years since DSLRs become more affordable to average users. More people are now buying a digital SLR to take a picture of a city at night with the built-in flash popped up, hoping to brighten up the scene. Veterans again scoff at them, but Sony cherishes their support. In this time and age, buyers are less concerned with the iota difference in image contrast and sharpness. They are direct. They just want to know if their set-up will ensure a “good and clear” picture. If not, what can be bought to solve the problem? The easy answer is to equip the camera with an anti-shake mechanism. Now the buyer asks which one works and which is cheaper. Sony stands out and says it does the job with only half the money. Deal.

Sony may not share the same reputation as Canon or Nikon, but it definitely has the support of one group of photography dudes, the new comers. They want to look professional, but they want it reasonably cheap too. Sony’s camera system fits this goal. The photographic market is no longer comprised solely by true professionals, greenhorns and serious amateurs are expanding their representations with considerable speed. With this trend in head, it is not hard to see why Sony will unlikely fail, if not flourish.

Further more, Sony is not poor. As one of the biggest multi-national corporation in the world, intra-departmental transfer of humongous funding is expected. Meanwhile, Sony has also inherited the full knowledge and essence of Konica Minolta. This intangible asset helped Sony to automatically assume the market of the “Minolta Population”.

Ultimately, the photographic business realm has already gone through another revolution. Disregarding the aristocratic Leica and other premature companies, the market will very soon be facing a tri-polar competition, with Sony raging a new commercial warfare. For sure, consumers will now be offered more choices and an informed decision is needed more than any other time, for when a camera is bought, camp-hopping is just not an option.

I live in Chiltern Park, it's been around for, what, 15years. Beside my condo, there's this newer, better condo called Springbloom. (the only down point is that they don't hold celebrations for events anymore since a fellow resident complained that she couldn't sleep) We're just a wall apart. I decided to climb over this wall like I'm escaping from prison, trying to avoid CCTVs all around. It was probably successful since I made it back unscathed!

Couple of weeks back, I decided to embark on a treacherous 17km hike with two of my friends, both from RI. One of them's Sec 1, the other's Sec 4. Bkt Timah looked good, but hey, Mcritchie looked better. There was something in Mcritchie other than forests.

Anyway, we started from Mcritchie Reservior Park and ended at a place called Venus Link. (it's still ringing in my mind - I've been considering this place as 'holy'. ) There really wasn't much along the way, most of the time we had completely random conversations usually ending in "what the hell =="..."

We were lucky enough to avoid the downpour that arrived in the evening. The sky seemed overcast and we were thinking along our journey "Lol gg, we're gonna be trapped in this place drenched and lost."

Fortunately, it started raining ten minutes after we walked to the bus stop outside Ai Tong School. (Venus link was somewhere there). Relieved, hmph.

After dinner at KFC, and out of boredom, I tried panning the cars that zoomed past and I got :

The rest were generally more failed panning attempts.

Lesson 4: Lighting

How to Manipulate Light

Light is everywhere, but how do we get it to do what we want it to do? There are a number of ways to manipulate light, based on the vision you have.

Flat reflectors are great and now they come in various colors. Before you go out and get this as equipment, try it out first. A large piece of white poster board or foam board works well. If you’ve got a live (and patient) subject, that helps to see skin tones. If not, an object works well, too.

When you move the board, how does the reflection from the sun affect the subject? How does it change the look of light on a person’s face? Go from side to side…any difference? Kneel down lower and prop the board on the floor. How does that change the light? What about if you stood on a chair and angled the board downward?

What if the light is too strong and gives off harsh shadows? Unlike tanning, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. are not good times for photographing with sunlight as your main source. While you can get a strong tan during these hours, the rays are too strong for portraits.

The best thing to do is to diffuse the light. Softening strong light is a great way to soften shadows.

Here are some examples:

Umbrellas are a great way to produce a wide and diffused light.

A diffusion screen (like translucent plastic) helps to soften the light.

A softbox encloses one or more lamps and will produce the desired effect.

The more diffused the source, the softer the light will be. Even a white curtain or sheet draped across a window can help to diffuse the light. Anything to soften the light coming in, natural or artificial, will work.

When you envision what you’d like to photograph, are there adjustments to lighting you will have to make? Waiting for early in the morning or late in the afternoon will naturally diffuse the light. "

Creative compositions for boring ops

Some suggestions on compositions for a relatively 'boring' op. Notice incorporation of multiple composition elements to provide layering and prevent image from being flat.

An example of a 'flat' image. Note 2 other problems: high noise (grainy image) and focus a bit off.

In 1 pic: who's the person, what's he doing? Bring out the subject of the event. Notice focus is a bit off too: this is the result of trying to find a compromise focus between the book and the person (i.e. have both relatively sharp instead of 1 sharp and the other blur). Other way to have both in focus is to increase depth of field by using a bigger aperture (larger f-number), but low lighting conditions prevent this.

Man and audience. Very standard but better than flat shots

To illustrate that he is blind, and also a filler shot (e.g. background) for magazines - notice large copy space (blank space to put text) where the paper is.

Of course my pics leave much to be desired. But these are some suggestions that might be useful for u to consider next time when taking a supposedly 'boring' op. Btw all i did is to take pics for 3min then sit down and just listen. Haha.

Regarding the topic below, the process that is used to create such photos is HDR processing. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. In a nutshell, this photo is obtained through digitally combining the same photo but with different exposure. The different exposures are either obtained from the camera, by setting it to take 3 pictures at once, 1 stop under exposed, normal exposure, 1 stop over exposed. Or it can also be modified, by tweaking the exposure of the same picture on photoshop.

It combines the pictures, thus as a result as shown by the pictures, there are very little shadows, making everything bright, it also gives the allusion of being a painting.

And yes, it is banned in competitions as it removes the realism of the photo.

What is Photography?*

To put it straight, photography is just a form of art creation. When camera was first invented, human saw the potential of cameras – the ability to replicate a real** scene in life on paper. The medium to do so was a device called “camera” and film.

Later in life, digital photography was introduced. There were of course advocates and protestors. To the protestors, digital photography introduces the element of unreality, through means of easy photo manipulation, which could destroy the principle that photography stands for.

Personally, I do not agree entirely with the “protestors”. As mentioned above, photography to me is a form of art creation. It does not matter whether the art piece is “real” or “unreal”, it is the picture that matters.

I think that the root cause for the argument over photography stems from the confusion in the definition of photography. Does it stands for “just a form of art creation using a device and picture manipulation is allowed”, or does it stands for “a specific form of creation that must replicate reality and must be unedited”. For me, I would prefer the first. For the protestors, perhaps the second is better.

To take on the first definition, one can naturally equate the purpose of camera as a brush or paint – they are all tools in which artists use to create. It does not matter if the result (picture / painting) replicates the world or deviates from the reality, it is an art creation.

On the contrary, the second definition is more “strict” in the sense that it requires the product (photographs) to have close proximity towards the “reality”. The extreme form of interpretation to the definition is this: one must always use a 50mm prime lens (to replicate the 46 degrees angle that our eyes see) and a perfect type of film / sensor that will always show all the colours correctly – as how we see the colours in the world. I assume that even choosing film photography would not meet the second requirement because photographic film cannot replicate the whole range of colours (electromagnetic waves) exactly as the way that our eyes interpret. In this sense, we have actually not achieved “photography” in history.

To many supporters of the second definition, I think that the above extreme example does not apply to them. To them, photography may simply be reproducing the “reality” (reality in general sense).

To conclude, the debate over “what is photography” will continue until consensus over the definition of photography has been reached. However, one should recognise that debate over film or digital is futile because both contribute to photography in different ways. The debate within digital photography – whether Canon or Nikon, or others, is of course also futile. Practical usage and needs under different circumstances will form the criterion for photography – both in terms of the technique and the equipment.

Cut out all the distractions, like this. Focus on the action.

Captures the moment... just too bad it blocks the 2nd guy, but u get the idea :-)

Multiple layers to the pic... interesting details reveal as ur eyes start peeling away layers

Nice use of panning. Maybe cut away the excess on the right? The action leads your eye to the left, maybe put something there? (the pic might look a bit empty)

notice how the use of framing and rule of thirds emphasizes the emotion.

Think abt this: what is the effect of the space in the center? Would it be better with or without that space?

What: 30th February – a placeholder for the real that reaches no boundaries; where imagination loses absurdity. Renowned for his juxtaposed black and white surrealistic images, photographer Chow Chee Yong will be launching his first photographic book titled 30th February, a collection of his past photographic works. A JCCI art scholarship recipient, he has been the first Singaporean whose works were acquired by Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in 2001, a collective of photographic prints which includes artworks by renowned photographers Nobuyashi Araki, Helmut Newton and Ansel Adams.

Briefly what we had learnt:

Aperture: the amount of light that is allowed into the camera at any point in time. Important relationship: as the value of the aperture increases, there is less light in the photo.
Shuttle speed: the duration that light is allowed into the camera. important relationship: as the value of the shuttle speed increases, there is more light in the photo.
Focus your picture on the centre of the subject. Remember to 1) half press 2)HOLD and recompose your shots 3) press the trigger.

Hi everyone,
Fellow RI Photo Club members, how are you doing? Displayed above is my favourite photo. Taken in England a while back. The river depicted in the photo is River Thames. Can anyone recognise the London Eye in the background? =)=)=)

The photo is just so wonderful. Technically, I would have to say that the photo isn't really special. However, when I stare hard into it, I would feel so calm, so relaxed. I would be totally absorbed by the photo.

So what is it about the photo that is so different? What is this special quality?Frankly, I am not quite sure myself, but i think it is the transquility. The feeling of peace you get when you look inside the photo. I don't know about you, but i can sort of hear the photo talking back to me. It is telling a message. Look at it again. What is it telling you?

What are the techniques that have made this possible? Techniques used in this photo: not much basically. But I think it is the composition of the photo. The composition is just so powerful: the London Eye, the skyline, and the boats are all in the right places. In addition, there are no distractions in the background of the photo, thus, one's eyes would definity fall on the subjects of the photos. Lastly, credit goes to the black and white effect that has made the photo so much more dramatic. Yea.

Oh my gosh, this photo is so emo... What do you guys think? Any comments?
